The paper aims
at analysing the traffic, technical, technological and ecological conditions
for the reconstruction of the Zagreb wharf and the construction and functioning
of the multipurpose terminal in the port of Rijeka.
The results of the analysis have shown that the reconstruction of the wharf
and the construction of a new multipurpose terminal can be made by embanking
the seashore and by substituting those areas used today by different industries
with new ones.
Since the reconstruction of
the wharf and the construction of the multipurpose terminal take place within
the very heart of the City of Rijeka, the authors of this paper give a special
emphasis to the estimate of their effect on the environment and on the fulfilment
of the ecological conditions as to the construction and operation of the multipurpose
terminal.

The significant elements in determining the competitiveness of a specified traffic route and the largeness of the gravitational area are distance, time and cost of the land transport. Therefore, this paper aims at analysing the competitiveness of the Rijeka traffic route and the corresponding land infrastructure, taking into consideration the distance, time and tariff components of the railway cargo transport. Although this analysis can be carried out separately for each component, here it is carried out by an integral approach which, in determining the optimum transport route, takes into consideration the simultaneous influence of all three components. The results of this analysis show the largeness of the gravitational area of the port of Rijeka and that of the competitive ports (Koper, Triest and Hamburg) when their shared transit market (Austria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary) is in question and when the used criterions of competitiveness are the optimum distance, time and cost of the railway transport.

The idea of
integrating cargo has appeared as a result of considering seriously to reduce
the costs of cargo packing and the time required for cargo loading into and
unloading from the primary means of transport within the integrated and multimodal
transport chain. From the commercial point of view, a container is the most
successful unit for integrating cargo packing so far. Consequently, the container
fleet and container ships, as the most important means of transport in the international
cargo traffic, are particularly interesting to be analyzed and compared with
other merchant fleets.
The paper aims at presenting
a brief survey of the development of the container fleet from the very beginning
up to the year 2001. Due to an intensified development of the fleet in the last
decade, a particular emphasis has been put on the analysis of the container
fleet covering the period from 1992 to 2001, using descriptive statistics.

This paper aims at analyzing the world liner shipping trends and outlooks at the beginning of the new century. The liner shipping sector expands today as a consequence of the numerous, fast development of containerized industry worldwide. Thus, the majority of the transported cargo in liner shipping includes containerized cargo and the liner shipping fleet is mostly represented by fully containerized ships. Furthermore, liner shipping companies continuously increase their container fleet, mainly with large container ships. It is also evident that these companies have a strong tendency of a mutual association to provide stronger operations at the market. Finally, ports are faced with a need of developing due to the expansion of the container shipping industry and especially due to the introduction of very large container ships in the liner fleet.
Key words: liner shipping, container ships, companies concentration activities, ports development.
