STUDENT SPORTS ACTIVITIES

Student Sports Association “Nautilus”

The Student Sports Association of the Faculty of Maritime Studies in Rijeka „Nautilus“, represents an important part of student life at the Faculty, promoting the values of sport, teamwork, a healthy lifestyle, and interfaculty cooperation. Members of the Association participate in numerous sports and recreational events, while various projects connect students of the Faculty of Maritime Studies with colleagues from other University of Rijeka departments.

One of the most renowned events in which Nautilus actively participates is the International Rijeka Rowing Regatta of the Faculty of Maritime Studies, a traditional competition in seamanship rowing with open lifeboats. Held annually, the regatta brings together students, professors, alumni, employees of various institutions, and friends of the Faculty.

Another major highlight is participation in the Student Fiumanka, a sailing regatta that is part of Rijeka’s large Fiumanka festival. The event gathers students and staff of the University of Rijeka, with Nautilus regularly competing with its own crew. In June 2025, students of the Faculty of Maritime Studies once again took part in the 26th Fiumanka, a competition that each year promotes sailing, the sea, and sporting spirit.

Under the guidance of Prof. Maja Skendžić, students of the Faculty of Maritime Studies actively take part in competitions such as:

  • UNIRI Sports Competitions
In addition to rowing and sailing, the Faculty encourages participation in various sports disciplines. Regular tournaments are organized in futsal, basketball, and volleyball, while students also compete in handball, table tennis, athletics, and chess.
  • STEM Games
A special highlight is the STEM Games – an internationally recognized competition combining sport and science. Students participate not only in sports but also in the scientific segment, developing innovative solutions related to technology, the sea, and transport. This event brings together sport, science, and entertainment, strengthening teamwork and student competencies.
  • Student Competitions by Study Program and Year
Various competitions are also organized among students by study program and year, held either in the Faculty’s sports hall or on outdoor fields.

Sailing Team PFRI

The Sailing Team of the Faculty of Maritime Studies in Rijeka brings together students and faculty staff who, through hands-on activities and competitions, develop their skills in sailing, teamwork, and navigation. The team actively participates in regattas, with one of the most notable events being the Student Fiumanka, where in 2024 the students of the Faculty of Maritime Studies won first place among 16 University of Rijeka teams.

Beyond the sporting aspect, the team promotes maritime tradition, a healthy lifestyle, and the active involvement of students in cultural and social life. For students of the Faculty, sailing represents an opportunity to gain practical experience, develop leadership and organizational skills, and contribute to the recognition and success of the Faculty at both regional and national levels.

Student Rowing Association PFRI

The primary activity of the Student Rowing Association PFRI is to promote rowing among students of the Faculty of Maritime Studies in Rijeka and to actively participate in national and international competitions within the framework of the event „Rowing of Maritime Faculties and Secondary Maritime Schools.”

This year as well, the Association’s members have achieved remarkable performances at numerous regattas. Particularly noteworthy are their appearances at the International Rowing Regatta of the Faculty of Maritime Studies, the Rowing Regatta of Maritime Schools in Bakar, and the international regatta in Portorož, where both men’s and women’s teams showcase their rowing skills, dedication, and sporting spirit. These successes confirm the Association’s importance in developing rowing traditions, connecting students, and promoting student sport.

Such events not only bring recognition and awards but also strengthen the sense of unity among students of the Faculty of Maritime Studies, promoting the sporting spirit and the tradition of rowing in Rijeka and beyond. Through its activities, the Association inspires new members and encourages the growth of student sport, combining competitive spirit with fellowship and teamwork.
