DOCTORAL (PHD) PROGRAMME 'MARITIME STUDIES'

A doctoral (PhD) degree is the highest level of formalized education in the Republic of Croatia. At the Faculty of Maritime Studies, the doctoral education is structured through a PhD programme. Our PhD degree qualifies the students for a range of positions both in the private and public sector.

Doctoral (PhD) Programme "Maritime Studies" is structured through a three-year study. The programme consists of a total of 180 ECTS credits, where 36 ECTS is gained through the coursework. The remaining credits are gained through independent research activities, leading to successful PhD thesis. This part assumes working under active mentoring of an experienced professor on a research project funded by national or international funds. There are seven different modules within the Study which can be selected, each of them offering several courses:

  • Nautical Sciences,
  • Marine Power and Engineering Systems,
  • Marine Electrical Engineering,
  • Maritime Logistics and Management,
  • Transport System,
  • Marine and Coastal Protection,
  • Naval Systems.

The learning outcomes of the Doctoral Study ‘’Maritime Studies’’ are comprehensively defined as follows:

  1. Conduct research by applying advanced scientific methods in accordance with generally accepted research ethics;
  2. Independently model, calculate, analyse, and design complex maritime systems, processes, and phenomena using advanced methodologies;
  3. Solve specific problems in maritime studies through an interdisciplinary approach, emphasizing the interrelationships between systems and their environments;
  4. Develop and improve activities in the domains of research, planning, design, execution, and management of complex maritime systems;
  5. Evaluate, analyse, and synthesize new concepts and results, as well as develop new methodological approaches in scientific research;
  6. Critically assess one’s own research and the research of others, including ethical, methodological, and scientific aspects;
  7. Apply research results and interdisciplinary approaches in contexts different from those in which the results were generated;
  8. Communicate and present scientific findings clearly and convincingly, tailored to academic and professional audiences, and lead scientific discussions;
  9. Promote technological advancement and innovation in a knowledge-based society through the application and dissemination of scientific research findings;
  10. Act independently within the academic community and professional practice, including international collaboration and interdisciplinary integration and knowledge transfer;
  11. Prepare a doctoral dissertation that encompasses independent research, original scientific results, critical analysis and synthesis, and contributes to the development of the scientific discipline in the field of maritime studies.

PhD candidates are expected to publish papers in the international peer-reviewed scientific journals and contribute to international conferences. Completing the part of the Study abroad is possible and warmly stimulated.

Admission to PhD education at Faculty of Maritime Studies Rijeka is possible for international students after passing admission interview and fulfilling administrative requirements.
